We all have the need to belong. To feel like we are a part of a group. This is a basic human desire, and according to social researcher, Hugh Mackay, and his book ‘What makes us tick?’ it’s one of the 10 desires that drive us. Wanting to belong rings true in our personal lives and our business life as well.
But, what happens when we want to belong to our industry group so much that our business, our brand, our website looks just like all the others? That’s when it can get dangerous.
If you look just like everyone else, why should a customer choose YOU?
According to my SEO guy, people these days will check out up to 10 websites before they make a purchasing decision. So if your website looks like everyone else’s, why should they choose you?
The swap test
Here’s a simple test that you can do to see if your business stands out or not. Cover up the logo on your website, and cover up the logo on a few competitors’, then compare them. If they’re all kinda the same, well I’m sorry to break it to you, but what you’ve got is a ‘cookie-cutter’ look that is not unique.
